The Importance of Mentorship

Mentorship is a highly needed resource in any professional pursuit that involves a lot of time, money and effort. Barriers including a high-stake entrance exam, required undergraduate classes, leadership positions, research and extracurricular activities are daunting tasks for any ambitious pre-medical student to overcome.
Unfortunately, mentorship has become a scarce resource in the physician community. It is understandable as the professional demands of physicians have significantly taken up more time and energy. Now, physicians often work overtime without compensation or protections that other employed professions enjoy. What precious time that is left, is often spent with our loved ones as we desperately try to have some sort of work/life balance.
Without mentorship, the physician profession will struggle to thrive as new physicians will have less opportunities to learn from the lessons of the older, wiser generation. We need to bridge this gap. Complacency with the status quo only hurts the generations to come and everyone will suffer, including our patients.
