Why join The Mediverse?

The journey to becoming a physician is a long and arduous one. It can feel like a goal or an achievement so far away, it's almost unobtainable. For many who do not have a physician in the family or a mentor that has paved the way, it may feel almost impossible.

High school and university pre-medical students struggle to find mentors willing to lift the veil of what their future may hold. Advice comes from multiple directions - often from those who haven't applied to medical school or never been part of an admission committee. There are many ways to get into medical school, but how do YOU get in? What is your path?

Medical students know that the only thing that is between them and becoming a doctor is the countless hours of studying, stressful exams, Step 1, tears, and weight gain (i.e. 4 years of medical school), meanwhile accruing hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt! Pivotal moments of trying to decide what kind of doctor you want to be and strategically picking audition rotations are notable, but what can you do to increase the odds of success? Match day is generally a day of elation for most! But for a few, it can be the most devastating and finding support can be hard.

Residents and fellows have unique challenges - grinding long hours, late nights, and taking high-stakes board exams when all your non-medical friends are out travelling the world and starting families. Balancing this transitional period of finishing your education and preparing for a life outside of training can be daunting. What kind job do you want to do? Negotiate employment contracts? Private practice? Medical group? Partnership?

For those that are attending physicians, the aim is to create a space to answer "What's next?" You've achieved what you've been working so hard for after a decade of studying, blood, sweat and tears. Now, it's time to dig in, work, pay off your medical school debt and catch up on life events that everyone else you know has done years ago. Work-life balance and fighting the dreaded "physician burn out" are constant challenges. Do you have a plan to reach your financial goals? How can we improve our quality of life and career/job satisfaction? Is there more?

Retired physicians, you've paid your dues! Your wisdom and experiences are invaluable and can be instrumental in guiding and shepherding the upcoming naive, bright-eyed generations. Sure, technology, surgical procedures and workflows have changed, but connecting with patients and the pursuit of helping others has not. Navigating a career in medicine and prioritizing what is most important in life remain challenges. Much can be learned from experienced physicians that are willing to share and mentor.

The aim of The Mediverse is complex and simple at the same time - create a space to empower and support aspiring physicians and physicians, personally and professionally. What happens when physicians level up? Innovation. Impact. And a better future of health!
